With nothing but a camera and a warning to ‘stand back if they fall on you’ I went to photograph Edinburgh’s Auld Reekie Roller Girls during a double-header home bout. Not really knowing what to expect, I left my friends in the stalls and took a track-side position with my camera. Half a game in, and I’d barely fired the shutter – I was transfixed. Too shy to actually approach the Edinburgh league, I sat on the idea whilst I plucked up the courage to find out more.
18 months, two cities and a pair of skates later, I am hooked on roller derby. After NSOing with the Dorset Roller Girls and subsequently joining the brand new Bath Roller Derby Girls I feel a minor obsession looming. This is my diary.
